Stella Canfield's art is known for its deep emotional content, brush dynamics and vibrant colors. She creates intuitively and spontaneously in a calm and natural way, expressing her individual emotional reaction to the object or scene she is painting. Her art is charged with the energy of her own life, her passion for people and nature. Stella draws inspiration from
the beauty around her and her positive view of the world.
She prefers to introduce symbols, giving viewers the opportunity to visualize the details. In this way, she seeks to involve them emotionally as partners, to give them a sense of participation in the process of making the picture. She believes that art is a way of spiritual communication.
Stella was born in Varna, Bulgaria and graduated from the Sports Academy (then VIF) in Sofia. In 1980, he left the country illegally to escape the oppressive communist regime. She lived for five years in Germany and moved to the United States in 1985. For the past few years, Stella has divided her time between Bulgaria and California, USA. Stella dedicates the first 30 years of her life to the world of sports and is respected as a national rower. In Germany she works in ceramics, which lays the foundations of her artistic career. A fan of watercolors since childhood, she became an avid student of this technique. Supported tirelessly by her best friend and husband Michael, she travels endlessly to take watercolor classes, seminars and conferences. Stella is a student of the best watercolor artists in the United States such as Milford Zornes, Serge Hollerbach, Carla O'Connor, Frank Webb, the legend Robert Wade, Australia and many others.
Stella has participated in many judging exhibitions, where she has received many prestigious awards. She teaches watercolor in the United States and Europe. In 1998, Stella opened her own gallery in the city where she lives, Kupville, Washington (noted in the publications of the "100 best art small towns in the United States"). In 2018, Stella was awarded the title of "Master" by the International Watercolor Society / IWS Globe ", an organization that includes more than 110 countries. Stella actively participates in their exhibitions. She. has won awards at IWS Pakistan, Prague / Czech Republic, Costa Rica, India and Malaysia. She is one of the jury of IWS Bulgaria. In 2020, Stella founded IWS California USA, a non-profit organization part of the IWS Globe, and held its first online exhibition. Stella is the official ambassador of the company DANIEL SMITH, USA.
She was recently honored by the company with two sets of Stella Canfield’s Artist Master Sets from her favorite colors, which are distributed in world art stores. She is also featured in the YouTube series of interviews In the Artists' Studio by John Cogley, CEO of Daniel Smith.
